Location
Seven miles west of the historic city of Stirling, North
Mid Frew is a distinctive farmhouse with adjoining outbuildings,
dominated by a tower with conical slated roof standing above
the rest of the property. Painted in a traditional shade of
yellow it stands on its own in a wide expanse of flat farmland
midway between the picturesque villages of Thornhill and Kippen.
Nearby Stirling is the hub of the Scottish motorway system.
To find us from there you should leave the motorway (M9) at
Stirling at Junction 10 (signposted for Crianlarich) and proceed
5 miles due west, passing the Safari Park, on the A84. A mile
after the Safari Park at the small hamlet of Blair Drummond
you bear left onto the A873 for Thornhill and Aberfoyle. Half a
mile after that you turn hard left onto the B8031 Coldoch
Road signposted for Kippen. North Mid Frew is clearly visible
on the right after a further two miles, and is entered by
its own tarmac driveway one third of a mile long. The Cottage
is accessed through the first gate on the right just before
the buildings and there is private parking on the gravel behind the outbuildings. On arrival please come to the main front
door of our house at the foot of the tower.
To reach North Mid Frew from the west or from Kippen or Thornhill
take the B822 which runs between the A873 (Aberfoyle to Stirling
road) and the A811 (Erskine Bridge and Dumbarton to Stirling
road) until you come to the B8031 at Frew Toll Cottage (half
way between Kippen and Thornhill) and proceed north east for
just one mile. North Mid Frew will be seen standing prominently
on your left.
Travelling by train the nearest station is Stirling, seven
miles away. Arriving by air it is equally convenient and a
similar distance (about 35 miles in each case) to come to
Edinburgh or Glasgow airport. Prestwick airport is 60 miles
from Thornhill. As our cottage is out in the country away
from public transport routes, it is best to hire a car in
Stirling or at the airport.
Once here, you are ideally located for day trips to Edinburgh,
Glasgow, Perth, the Trossachs, Loch Lomond, the central highlands
and the east or west coast. Further afield to the Scotland/England
border country, to Inverness or Aberdeen or to the Western
Isles it may be best to include at least one overnight stay
and this could perhaps be undertaken before or after your
stay at Thornhill. Most motoring and tourist maps of central
Scotland form a good basis for touring and sightseeing from
Thornhill. One of the best for the countryside within a 12
to 15 mile radius of our cottage is the Ordnance Survey 1¼
inches to the mile map 'Stirling & The Trossachs' (Sheet 57
of the Landranger series).
